Bishop Lawrence Persico of the Diocese of Erie has formally announced the appointment of Mrs. Gretchen Caruso to serve as Headmaster of DuBois Central Catholic. Caruso will assume her new position on June 1, 2017. Currently serving as principal for pre-school through Grade 5, Caruso is no stranger to the Central family. Msgr. Charles Kaza, President of DuBois Central Catholic, says, “Gretchen has experienced the whole spectrum of the gift of a quality Catholic education offered here at DuBois Central Catholic: first as student, then graduate, faculty member, parent, and most recently, elementary principal. Kaza adds, “She is well acquainted with and been very supportive of the mission of our Catholic school system.”
With over 20 years in teaching in our local Catholic schools, Caruso’s commitment and dedication have been evident over these many years. Serving on numerous committees both school-wide and diocesan-wide is testament to her educational acumen and leadership abilities, whether dealing with school safety or long-range planning.
After graduating from Central in 1989, Caruso earned a BS in Elementary Education from Clarion University and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from The Pennsylvania State University. She also holds Administrative Certification K -12 from IUP. In submitting her application for this position, Caruso wrote, “It is with great enthusiasm that I submit this letter for the position of Headmaster.” Kaza explains, “It is this gift of such enthusiasm that she brings to this position of leadership that makes her a superb candidate.”
The Diocese of Erie and the Board of Directors express a genuine word of gratitude to Mr. Michael Armanini as he prepares to complete this third year of promised service as Headmaster. Kaza says, “When we were seeking a Headmaster three years ago, Mr. Armanini was approached and unselfishly offered his expertise for this leadership position. He has been tireless with his daily efforts in helping us offer a quality Catholic education for our students.”
“When we were in need of a Headmaster, Mr. Armanini was approached and unselfishly offered his expertise to keep Central moving forward… he has been tireless with his energy and faithful to the school’s mission…and we thank him and ask God’s blessings as he begins a new chapter in life!” When asked about her educational philosophy, Caruso states, “I believe in the development of the whole child…mind, body and spirit. I want to make sure that each child grows academically and is able to work to their full potential, while recognizing and celebrating their individual talents and successes.” She concludes, “DCC is home to me…and I look forward to continue serving in this new capacity.”
Caruso is the daughter of John and Mary Joan Yargar. She is married to Michael Caruso of DuBois, and they are the parents of Gabrielle, Class of 2017 at DCC.
