Students:
-
Never give anyone your DACS network password.
-
Some web sites ask you to give personal
information to qualify to win a prize. NEVER
give out personal information without your
parents' permission.
-
Anyone can post anything to a web site. Review
web sites carefully. Your teachers will help you
learn how to do this.
-
When you copy information from a web site, or
other electronic resources, you MUST cite the
source, or it is plagiarizing. If you do copy
and paste information, put it in quotation marks
and list the source where you obtained it.
-
When you copy pictures, video, or sound clips,
you must also cite the source where you obtained
them.
-
Do not play inappropriate games, send instant
messages, or access inappropriate web sites
during school. Remember that the netbook/laptop
is a tool for learning. If you choose to do any
of these things, you are jeopardizing the
program and your integrity. There will be
consequences as established by the DuBois Area
Catholic Schools Student Code of Conduct.
-
The school has a filter to prevent you from
accessing inappropriate web sites. People who
post pornographic images or who are involved in
hate groups often find ways to get around
filters. If you accidentally stumble upon an
inappropriate web site, quickly exit, close your
lid, and tell your teacher. DO NOT show or
discuss what happened with your classmates. Be
sure to follow this procedure.
-
Do not use file sharing services like LimeWire,
KaZaA, BitTorrent, and BitComet. These sites
allow strangers from all over the world to share
files. They can be used to download movies, TV
shows, music, software, and more. File sharing
can cause serious problems. First of all, it is
illegal to download copyrighted materials and
you could end up in a lawsuit. Second, you are
opening up your computer to all users of the
file sharing service! File sharing services work
by installing shared folders on your computer;
any files stored in the shared folder are open
for others to view, download, and save files.
Virus creators love file sharing services; it is
easy for them to hide a virus in a song (or any
other file) and save it to millions of shared
folders. When the song is opened, you get a
special present... a virus. If you have a file
sharing program, remove it. Parents, check to
see if your son/daughter has access to them. To
remove, go to the Control Panel, and select Add
or Remove Programs. Highlight the program and
then click the remove button.
