Unique Math Activity to Teach Calculating the Volume of a Solid

UNIQUE WAY TO CALCULATE THE VOLUME OF A SOLID

AP Calc students (front) Megan Graeca, John Swalligan, and Jessica Tomasko along with (standing) Cam Stom and Anthony DePello are students of Mrs. Laurie Zamperini, who took a break after their AP test at DCC to tackle a project using slices of bread to calculate the volume of a solid. Each student had a triangular base in the shape of a different assigned cross-section and had to cut the bread slices to fit one’s base. The result created two functions intersecting to form a triangle on poster board. Zamperini adds,” After gluing the bread together and to the base, students had to calculate the volume, which visually demonstrated a 3-D topic covered in class.”
